The latest addition to my website is Svetoslav Minkov and Konstantin Konstantinov‘s Сърцето в картонената кутия [The Heart in the Cardboard Box]. This is a short Bulgarian absurdist novel written by trwo writers and tells of a poet who has lost his actual, physical heart. Much of the novel gives the writers an excuse to mock all and sundry, including the Bulgarian literati and, indeed, themselves while our hero is aided by a US detective to find the missing organ while an old university friend persuades him to give up poetry for a lucrative job and a lovely wife. It is all tongue-in-cheek and great fun and a rare glimpse into the pre-war Bulgarian avant-garde.
