The latest addition to my website is Vigdis Hjörth‘s Om bare (If Only). Ida Heier is married with two children and a successful playwright. One day at a conference she meets Arnold Bush (short, balding). He is a professor of German. They end up in bed. The rest of the book describes her obsession with Arnold. He lives in Trondheim, she in Oslo. They meet, they argue, they reconcile, he disappears, they get back together. She divorces her husband. Initially he does not divorce his wife. What does she see in him? He is violent, narcissistic, serially unfaithful, drinks too much and gets very emotional. Yet, somehow, she wants him and he, most of the time, seems to want her. It is an entirely destructive relationship. Her children hate him and, at times, so does she but, somehow, for some reason, they keep coming back together, till the next fight, the next argument, the next breakup.
