Scholastique Mukasonga: Sister Deborah (Sister Deborah)

The latest addition to my website is Scholastique Mukasonga‘s Sister Deborah. The novel is set in Rwanda when it was a Belgian colony. A ,mission consisting of black Americans comes to a village in Rwanda, with Sister Deborah seemingly the leader. She seems to have the gift of healing and helps many, including Ikirezi, the narrator. But she also preaches that God will soon arrive, unlike the Catholic God and she will be a black woman, Mother Africa. Women no longer need to work in the fields or obey their husbands. The women revolt, tearing out the coffee plants and the Belgian authorities feel they must react. A troop attacks the mission and Deborah is shot but her body disappears. Ikirezi grows up,and wins a scholarship to the United States but is determined to find out what happened to the woman who cured her and tracks down Mama Nganga, formerly Sister Deborah and learns what really happened. We also see what happens to both women. It is a very well-told novel whatever your religious views.
