The latest addition to my website is Jean Portante‘s Projets pour un naufrage prémédité [Projects for a Premeditated Shipwreck]. This novel, from Luxembourg, is strange from the cryptic title to the convoluted plot. The hypersensitive Laure and unfaithful Frédéric, married for ten years, are seemingly splitting up. He thought he was sending her away but she seems happpy to leave. She heads for the station and takes a random train to a rundown town. Much of the action takes place in the the hotel where Laure ends up. However it seems Frédéric has some connections with the chambermaid, Elena, who may or may not be the daughter of the unnamed owner who may or may not know Laure who may or may not be getting back together with Frédéric who cannot know Laure is staying at the hotel but apparently does. And how are Elena’s father and the seemingly dead but very much alive woman in the room next to Laure involved?Few answers. Many questions.
