The latest addition to my website is Stratis Doukas‘ Ιστορία είνος εἰμφαλώτου (A Prisoner of War’s Story). This is a very short book amd based on the account of an actual Greek man who managed to escape to Greece when the Turks took Smyrna in 1922. Our narrator is separated from his parents in Smyrna and arrested. He and the many other Greek prisoners are beaten and then sent on a forced march. They are attacked by the locals, not given food or water unless they have money to bribe the guards and, in some cases, killed. Our narrator and some friends manage to escape and then split up. Our narrator , who speaks fluent Turkish, gets a job as a shepherd with a Turk but finally manages to escape and get a boat to Greece. Doukas tells his tale well (he revised it several times) as we feel for the unfortunate Greeks brutalised by the Turks.
