The latest addition to my website is Costas Taktsis‘ ‘ Το τρίτο στεφάνι (The Third Wedding). This was Taktsis’ only novel and what fun he must have had writing it. We follow two Greek women – Nina and Hecuba. Nina has a permanent feud with her adult daughter. On her wedding night to her first husband and father of her daughter she caught her husband having sex with her brother. As the title tells us she will marry two other men, the third being the son of Hecuba. Hecuba has only one husband – also a disaster but in a different way – but three children, two of whom are also disasters, though she dotes on her drug addict, criminal son. As well as disastrous spouses and children, the two women meet through a religious fanatic, who has got Nina’s second husband in her clutches and make common cause against said fanatic. While clearly some of it is sad. Taktsis takes great pleasure in mocking all and sundry and finishes up with Nina wondering about her fourth wedding.
