Rafał Wojasiński: Tefil (Tefil)

The latest addition to my website is Rafał Wojasiński‘s Tefil (Tefil). A young man looking for information about his long deceased mother goes to a small Polish village, where he meets Tefil, who may have known her. However this book is, as the title states, about Tefil. He is old, permanently broke but more than happy to scrounge or borrow but not pay back. Above all he is garrulous and tells the young man about his life as well as philosophising about life and death and a host of other topics. He is one of those larger than life literary characters whom you find fascinating and repulsive in equal measure when reading about them but from whom you would run a mile if you met them in real life.
