The latest addition to my website is Thuận‘s Chinatown : tiẻ̂u thuyé̂t (Chinatown). Our unnamed heroine spends the entire book on a Paris metro train which is held up by the investigation of a suspicious duffle bag, with her twelve-year old son asleep on her shoulder. She spends the time ruminating on her life. She had been married to Thụy , whom she met at school. He had been ostracised as he was half Chinese, and Vietnam and China were at war. They had become friends though had no contact when she went to Leningrad to study for five years. Nevertheless, they did marry and had a son, Vĩnh. When Vĩnh was one month old, Thụy suddenly left. She has had no contact with him since though suspects he is in Chợ Lớn. the largest Chinatown in the world. She is now teaching English to unruly students in Paris but wonders about Thụy. She has a French friend, known only as the the guy whose wife also suddenly left him and whose sons are friends with Vĩnh. He frequently travels to Vietnam. Now, aged thirty-nine, she wonders about Thụy, about what Vĩnh will do with his life and her own life. And still the train does not move.
