The latest addition to my website is Tatiana Țîbuleac:‘s Vara în care mama a avut ochii verzi [The Summer When Mum Had Green Eyes]. The story starts with an outpouring of hate and contempt that the narrator, Aleksy, has for his mother, who is picking him up after his final day at school. His feelings and mental health issues were possibly caused by events surrounding the death of his younger sister, Mika. He had planned to go to Amsterdam with his friends (sex, drugs) but his mother bribes him to come with her to a strange house in rural France, her favourite country. To his surprise, things change and he and his mother grow very much closer and fit in with the locals. We learn that he is writing this account in the future as a therapeutic exercise, when he is a famous painter but still with mental health issues. However the focus is on how his relationship with his mother dramatically changes over the course of that summer.
