Carlos Paradona Rufino Roque: Tchanaze, a donzela de Sena (Tchanaze (Beauty and the Beads)

The latest addition to my website isCarlos Paradona Rufino Roque‘s Tchanaze, a donzela de Sena (Tchanaze (Beauty and the Beads) . Tchanaze is the most beautiful young woman in the region in Mozambique, coveted by all the men. Mbemba, however, is inflicted with n’fucua which means that the men are not interested. The area seems to be crawling with witches, warlocks, spirits and healers of all kinds, some good, some bad. Mbemba and her mother Farença realise that Mbemba has been seduced by evil spirits and arrange with a bad warlock to transfer the n’fucua to Tchanaze and she soon dies. Sometime later Campira, a good warlock, thinks he sees her living on her own but she disappears. The rest of the book describes how Campira, Tchanaze’s parents and other good witches/warlocks struggle to get Tchanaze back, while Mbemba and her mother struggle to thwart them. It is a highy colourful and imaginative tale of good versus evil, with numerous witches/warlocks/spirits and shape-shifting., strange ceremonies, magical animals and the ever-present Zambezi.
