The latest addition to my website is Peter Stamm‘s Agnes (Agnes). Our unnamed narrator is a Swiss author temporarily lviing in Chicago, where he is writing a book on US luxury trains. He had written fiction but felt he might not be good enough. He meets Agnes, a scientist, in the library and they eventually start a relationship. They start an affair and she soon moves in with him. At her request, he starts writing a story about her. They have their ups and downs but when she tells him that she is pregnant he says he does not want a baby and storms off. When he returns she has gone, taking her things. Only later, when he learns that she has a miscarriage, does he go and see her and they get back together. Again, at her request, he takes up the story, giving her the baby she has been unable to have and, indeed, a second one. However she does not like his ending. He writes an alternative ending and, when he is out she finds it on his computer.
