The latest addition to my website ‘s is Margarita LiberakiΤα Ψάθινα Καπέλα (Three Summers). Unlike most of the Greek novels I have read, this one does not get into 20th century Greek history and politics but is a primarily cheerful tale. It tells the tale of three sisters living with their divorced mother, aunt and grandfather in the country. Initially as young girls they focus on the joys of the countryside but, as they get older, boys come into the picture. Inevitably there are complications as Maria, the oldest, is first off the mark, though she hesitates, while Katerina the youngest and the narrator , is unsure but finally succumbs. We get a host of colourful tales about friends and neighbours to make this a lively and cheerful book, a view shared by Greek readers who still buy the book.
